Queen of logistics (not to mention the driving force behind our entire business!) Sam, was recently featured in West Magazine with her top tips for living life to the full in the Westcountry. Here goes...
View – From St Agnes Beacon – the view never looks the same and you can see vast scope of our familiar stomping ground, feels like I am on top of my little world!
Beach – Chapel Porth, but you have to be tuned into the tides and time it right. Grab a hedgehog ice cream (legendary!) and enjoy. The beach holds many memories of relaxed evenings in the company of good friends.
Arts Venue – Cornwall is great for immersing yourself in art, dance and creative theatre experiences. My favourite events are Rogue Theatre’s performances in Tehidy Woods, which happen a few times a year. For a visit at any time of year, Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange in Penzance always have interesting exhibitions.
Activity – A current favourite is horse riding with my daughter, who has just become horse mad. It’s special to have an activity we can share together with the added bonus of exploring our patch from a different perspective. Also jumping in the sea for a refresh is always going to be top of my list.
Food – As part of the Woodfired Canteen team I am lucky enough to enjoy amazing food on a daily basis. Food is so much more than just fuel – it’s about the whole experience. So when we’re not cooking we love having Aggie Fish and Chips on the beach, joining friends at the Hidden Hut or grabbing a booth outside at Porthmeor Beach Café.
Tipple – As a proper Westcountry lass, Cider has always been a favourite, and Secret Orchard Cider is a new-found delight. Other than that, when I am feeling a bit more glamourous a Tarquins G&T hits the right spot.
Pub – A tough one, as we are lucky to have some great pubs around us. However my all round favourites for a drink, some food and a warm welcome have to be Gurnard’s Head in Zennor, and Star And Garter in Falmouth.
Restaurant – I don’t often get out to proper restaurants - I find the restaurant setting can be quite formal and not so relaxing on a rare night off. You’d most likely find us heading down the road to Schooners for the best combination of lively bar (well stocked with Secret Orchard bottles!) and the most awesome menu of shared plates created by all-time legend Adam Vasey.
Way to relax – Not something I am an expert at but, with running a growing business and looking after the family, I really do need to find a way! I recently testing out my own creative side and discovering some very amateur skills with clay, wood and yarn, which has been fun. Might stick to wandering with the dog for now though.
Weekend Away – I’d head to Bath for the atmosphere, the city, the food and a small dose of hustle and bustle. For a more extravagant weekend away… well, a surprise is always nice!
Favourite Shop – 108 coffee shop in Truro is my most frequented ‘shop’! Visiting Falmouth and dipping in and out of the many independent stores is great when time allows - I love the quirky offerings and you can always find something different and a bit special. It also means I can catch up with our friends at Finisterre – a fellow Cornwall-based brand we are proud to work with from time to time.
Treat – I’m not one for spas and treatments - my biggest indulgence is uninterrupted time out at Gold Bird Hair Design in Truro and getting the full works with amazing Aveda products; in fact think I am due a visit soon…
